Long Shop Museum

Long Shop Museum
Located at the heart of the original Leiston Works, the Long Shop Museum tells an inspiring story of enterprise and endeavour in this small Suffolk town and its remarkable factory.

Amongst the cluster of historic buildings is one that the factory workers called ‘the Cathedral’. This jaw-dropping building is The Long Shop itself – an icon of Industrial Britain and the world’s first purpose-built workshop for assembly line production.

Visitors to the museum can see how Leiston engineers designed and made ploughs, steam engines, peat harvesters, trolley buses, washing machines and more – and sold them across the world. With a garden for picnics and photo opportunities galore, the museum is also right next to Leiston’s Recreation Ground.
