The Scallop Aldeburgh

The Scallop

As you head a short distance north of Aldeburgh town centre, a unique and sleepy sculpture takes prominence on Aldeburgh beach. The Scallop, a giant four-metre high stainless steel scallop shell has stood tall on the Suffolk coast for just over a decade and is the work of renowned local artist, Maggi Hambling.

The creation is a tribute to local composer Benjamin Britten pierced with the words, "I hear those voices that will not be drowned", from his opera, Peter Grimes. It is the perfect place to be in the early morning or late evening sunset to contemplate the mysterious power of the sea. Attracting locals and tourists alike, it has become popular year round destination.
